Your First Step:
Choose the appropriate undergraduate program for you. We strongly suggest that you consider subjects (for college) such as Psychology, Social Work, and Counseling. Start developing professional references, as well.
Get the best grades that you possibly can in order to be a competitive candidate.
Your Second Step:
Pursue membership in relevant associations that will provide you great contacts.
Bachelor’s Degree College Graduates

CACREP– The Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs). Rehabilitation counseling programs are usually accredited by
CORE (The Council on Rehabilitation Education).
First:
Begin to research school programs as soon as possible. Consider volunteering and work opportunities
Seek viable paid employment or volunteer opportunities.
Second:
For those who are interested in working in school counseling, it is preferable to seek a graduate program in guidance and counseling.
If in pursuit of mental health licensure, one should enter a graduate mental health counseling program that includes a minimum of sixty semester coursework hours. It is preferable to choose an academic program that is accredited in accord with CACREP. If you select a program that does not have CACREP-accreditation, you will need to demonstrate that the program meets all of Florida’s requirements for coursework and that the fieldwork experience adheres to all Florida standards.
Third:
Those who are aspiring to being licensed as a professional counselor need to work for two years under the supervision of a licensed mental health counselor (or another acceptable professional that the board deems qualified). One must register as an intern before beginning to accrue hours.
The Florida Department of Health is the appropriate licensing agency.
Fourth:
Plan to take your exams successfully. For licensing as a mental health counselor, one must competently pass the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination, offered through the National Board for Certified Counselors.
